Handling Rare-Earth Magnets
Rare-earth magnets are strong and should be treated with respect. Keep away from electronic equipment (computers, television screens, etc) or items that have information stored magnetically (credit cards, computer disks, etc). Magnets can corrupt stored data. To avoid damaging edges, do not let them collide. Small magnets present few problems, but larger ones will chip when they collide. 1″ magnets can actually pinch your hand enough to raise a blood blister. To separate magnets slide them apart. With large ones (1/2″ diameter and up), it may be necessary to drill a hole in a piece of wood just under 1/8″ deep and as large diameter as you want to separate. Then use a scrap of wood to push all except one magnet away from the hole.
Maximum Attraction
To increase power of a magnet, put a piece of iron or steel (not stainless steel) behind it, same size or larger than magnet.
